Luck vs Skill Posted by Moojus (VIP) Mar 4 2006 9:06AM I will be the first to acknowledge that there is a large amount of luck in cribbage. One is 'stuck with' the cards they are dealt and the card that is cut. You have no control over the cards dealt to you and your opponent or the cut card.<br><br>I was taught at the kitchen table like many were. Once the basic understanding is learned, it is easy to win 50% of the games.<br><br>The majority of games you have little chance of altering the final outcome - win vs lose.<br><br>The 'Skill' is in understanding the board position of both you and your opponent and basic probability (increasing your odds and reducing your opponents odds) theory.<br><br>This 'Skill' factor comes into play in a small percentage of games (4-8%) in which you can control the final outcome - win vs lose. <br><br>In American Cribbage Congress (ACC) tournament play, in addition to tracking wins, you track skunks and spread points (the amount you won or lost by). The 'Skill' factor comes more into play (during ACC Play) as it helps you to either reduce the chances of you being skunked, increases the chances of you skunking your opponent as well as impacting the spread points. in this scenario, I see the 'skill' factor as high as 15% in the case of the top players in the ACC like Duane Toll from Oregon.
