My rant of the day

My rant of the day Posted by purple-planet Jul 6 2006 5:44PM With the closure of the Zone cribbage site, it has been quite evident that we have many new and interesting players here at Game Colony. I, for one, am thrilled to meet loads of new people from around the world. I have made so many great friends here already. I cant thank you enough for existing. I don't want to complain (but I will anyway!!). First, the icons issue : The table icons are mostly inoffensive, but hardly cute to me for the following three reasons (if interested, read on, if not skip to next rant :) : Firstly, they show little individuality. At least the avatars (our supposed self-portrait) have some personality. (Ill get to those later .) Red or blue shirts? Starting to sound like pink is for girls and blue is for boys . [from webmaster] Here's a better sports analogy -- imagine boxing -- in the red corner ... in the blue corner ...." Obviously, those who play competitively for $ prizes get brighter shades of those colors... Secondly, the purpose of the table icon? Empty or full, money or no money this is easily viewed from the text format. And as someone pointed out, if we want to join an empty table, we can again see it clearly from the single name in the list. [from webmaster] What 'we' can see, some of 'them' newbies cannot In a week, we'll add a way to turn off the icons Furthermore, they are of low quality graphics. For somebody like me who works in advertising I find it poor on the technological quality side. (Yes I am a snob of sorts!) In this day and age of technology, most chatrooms or message boards use real photography that can be individually uploaded. This is where I would like to chose my own photo (real or not!) instead of the current avatars...)I think this site needs to recruit some real (young?) computer geeks who love making a website more cool .It would attract more advertising $$$ from outside sources too, since more people are now here (more hits or impressions in the world of advertising-geek talk!) [from webmaster] Oh-oh player tech talk... If players get here an option to upload photographs or nice & big pictures, everybody else will have to keep downloading them and suffer through much looonger downloads. Moreover.. sites who allowed this suffering found that they had to constantly police pictures for indecency, etc. Pictures in icons, on the other hand, are the lightest possible and require microseconds to download... But if you want to propose different graphics that are even lighter and better, by all means -- there'd be some $tickets there for you -- but please use Contact Us rather than ranting essays if your purpose is to achieve something constructive... Basically, I just dont find they add anything spectacular to this terrific site Then again, they dont bother me one little bit either . and they do add colour to the page! There my 2 (Canadian) cents (or Non-sense) worth. However what does bother me, is now that there are so many more people here (which as I said I think is great) I find it takes forever to run down the list to see who is in the room. It used to be 25-40 people, in general, when I played. Easy enough to scroll down the list and look for my buddies. Now the list is about 75-100 long, I find it takes forever to scroll down . I think an easy solution to this problem (of mine!) would be to have 2 "main rooms". One, for those who are interested in playing for tickets ($$), and another for those, like me, who have no interest at all in playing for money. (For rating and ranking, and world peace, well that's another story). Players of both colours , blue (for ticket holders) and black (for us cheap folk!) could freely go from one room to the next so as to be able to chat with the players .but the games in the separate rooms would be either for money or not. Yes, I realize this probably requires some new programming .but Im sure it is possible . On a similar note, I find it frustrating NOT being able to chat with a buddy who is blue ($/VIP/TD) while they are playing a game just because they have money status I cry discrimination!!! Make it an option: chat on or chat off. Simple! (One would think) I guess thats my rant for today .hope youve enjoyed it. (Theres a joke of the day, so why not rant of the day?! ) Purple-planet aka PP (ugh!) or Lisa to most of you! PS Im doing my best to be especially friendly to all the new people from the Zone, so that they too, can realize what a wonderful community it is we have going here. PPS Thanks for doing such a great job here please dont take my complaints too seriously! well said!!! Posted by KymB (VIP) Jul 6 2006 10:38PM since i dont get to see you too much anymore "PP" HELLO........hope all is well. I think you wrote an interesting piece. (to go one step further - how about add a buddies list-one we could customize as needed) that way we would know who was on line in an instant!! i know that we already have who's on line....but the buddies list could work. well take care your friend kim aka kym LOL buddies list GREAT idea Posted by Mrs_Incredible_1970 (VIP) Jul 6 2006 11:23PM I totally agree with a buddies list....I play sometimes on the other site, and I have a list of friends and it shows me not only if they are in that site, but WHERE they are at - which game they are playing, and in which room.......that is so helpful...would love to see that here at Game Colony as well :) My Canadian ranting Posted by purple-planet Jul 7 2006 7:25PM Thanks webmaster... I liked your comments and I guess you're right about the [proposed] avatars being too upload heavy....but isn't there any way to personalize them a bit more...I like being to look different than my opponents (mind it's kinda fun to play my twin!). from webmaster: As a matter of fact, at this moment an external company that specializes in Internet design is working on extra avatars. They will also try to improve on table micro-images/icons but nothing definite was proposed yet -- almost all designers are used to bigger heavy-to-download images Thanks Kymby for the support...you're right we haven't connected in a long time...I miss you too....which brings me to today's rant...I wish we can communicate with other players via email (for those who wish) and I was wondering if that could be an option to make it "public" if chosen. And great suggestion for a buddy list. Anybody else wish to rant about something? this is the place! Big kisses to all my crib buddies |
