50 moves rule

50 moves rule

Hello! I have a question concerning the rule that after 50 moves without any exchange of figures, the game is a draw. - Is it possible to program this rule here on gamecolony? Or is it no official chess rule. I just had again the (unfair) case that i had to make 100 moves in a 5 minute game with a 100% draw position (absoluteley no way to win), cause my opponent played on time. Thats quite an annoying game - luckily it is rare that players do it. Still, the program doesnt recognize the 50 moves rule. Thanks for help! Albrecht

The following standard draw rules are implemented (independent of time expiration)

(1) insufficient mating material

(2) 3-time position repetition during the last 10 moves (on opponent request
only - by pressing the 'Draw' button. No acknowledgement from opponents will be necessary in this case - a Draw will be awarded automatically)

(3)stalemate

Although a 50-move rule is also an international rule, it is not implemented at GameColony because:
-- it is relatively rare
-- it can be often replaced by position repetition rule (2)
If this rule is easy to implement, it would be good. I lost in similar circumstances once, much to my surprise, because once we reached the 50 moves, I was expecting the draw to be awarded.

This rule...

...only occurs probably once every 20,000 games, maybe more. I dont think its that big of a deal. And besides, if you do go 50 moves with out taking a piece then you probably wouldnt ever finish the game anyway.
