A Change in Ladder Rules
Posted by webmaster (moderator) Jul 1 2009 7:33PM

As soon as Ladder prizes are disbursed, each of the Top Ten players will be dropped 100 ladder spots. (Previously a 10 rung drop was in place) The above rule change was implemented two weeks ago per suggestion of one of the players who is a regular in Top Twenty. We apologize not announcing the rule change earlier in Forum ahead of time. The reason for the rule change was very simple. After looking at Top Ten players over a 12 month period, we found that very frequently the same players were making Top Ten list month after month. Some of them found ways to stay in Top Ten that even though did not break any rules, were very 'creative'. We want all players to have a shot at making Top Ten and dropping the winners out of the 100 range was deemed to be a reasonable solution. If a player has good game skills, he/she would eventually make it back to Top Twenty while, at the same time, giving a chance of advancement to others. I am glad that you decided to post these changes. It would have been nice and fair if it had been done before people worked to get in the top 10 at the last minute. Someone that was ranked 15 and worked to get to 10 before 12:00 and got a ticket or two and dropped to 100, probably doesn't appreciate it. They probably would have stayed at 15 had they known about these changes. I agree, it is a good thing to do so that everything is fair. It also would have been a good thing to let everyone know about this before it was done, not after! I know this change doesn't really affect me, because I was ranked #1 and would drop anyway. I'm just speaking for the ones that worked hard to get in the top at the end of the month. Hopefully we will be informed of rule changes before they take place next time. Thanks-Dana

Dana.. the most fun is in the "climb". The new rule will encourage those in the top to play those at the bottom, giving them a chance up so that when they get there they will help others climb. It's the climb that makes the ladders special. What's it prove to stay in the top? I think you will see that one rung at a time is almost thrilling. :)

Rules change

I agree with the moderator. There have been some questionable play between a few players. It seems unlikely that just a few players are always at the top. The rules when the same players are at the top give them opportunity to stay on top when they "trade" wins with each other. They seem to only play each other. It's going to loosen things up and more players will get a chance to play each other and give EVERYONE a chance to get higher on ladder. With the former rules, one month some players will be on top, then 11-20 ladder spots get the top spot. Here, you actually have to EARN your way to the top. I like the rule and the cards will do the talking. I am glad there will be more variety in the top slots.

The climb is is, indeed, alot of the fun. But I think you missed the point of it sure would be nice to be informed of changes to the rules before and not 7 1/2 hours after you have been dropped 100 spots. The rukles are what they are, and I for 1 like to know the rules so that I don't break them, or get surprised by a new 1 that was implemented with out any notice at all.

Right of course

You're right tg. of course. Error on our part. Watch for new ladder rules as web is updating and refining rules and method of play concerning the ladders all the time. It is, and always has been, the goal to make the ladders, as well as the games, as fun and fair as possible. Thanks to ALL for cooperation and consideration. :)

Apologies once more. I promise that from now on we will have all ladder rule changes posted in Forum as soon as they are implemented and at least a week before the end of the month

Yes. I have climbed the ladder before and you're right it was "thrilling". I have no problem with the rule and think it's a good idea, as I stated in my first post. As Tom stated you missed the point I was trying to make. There definitely needed to be some changes made to the ladder. I have only being playing ladder for a few months, but knew some things needed to change. I hope to keep seeing changes and improvements to the ladder. Change is ALWAYS good!! I don't think I will have much time to play ladder this month (so many things going on), but I hope to get back into the game in the next few months. I look forward to the new ladder rules and the new people that will be up at the top. Have you ever thought of making the challenge time shorter? Seven days is such a long time. Thanks!

I agree with rule change and would like to see...

I agree that the rules needed to be changed,(advance notice would have been fairier), but I honestly don't think it's going to affect much. Once certain players make it back where they normally are,I have a feeling we will see the same thing. If you really want to get somewhere with this change, the amount of days for a challenge MUST be changed. 7 days is far too long. People will drag it out to the last day and then ultimately, a player only gets to place 4 challenges a month. Either make the challenge time shorter or allow more challenges to be made at the same time, and maybe make the list for TOP 25 instead of 20. I have always tried to give everyone who was climbing a chance. I am rarely challenged because they know I will play them. To reiterate and add to what DEALER1212 said... We need to play first with INTEGRITY, SPORTSMANSHIP & DIGNITY. ( oh...and SPEED! lol)

I would like to suggest that introducing the mandatory 100 rung drop is not going to address the problem. The problem being, as you have said, that some top ten players find very 'creative' ways to maintain their position at the top. Replace one top ten group with another and you will find there will always be some that will continue to be 'creative'. On that point Im sure we agree. However, where we disagree is that this 'creativity' is not breaking the rules. I believe it is. And I believe you already have the means to alleviate this problem in the current rules. Which state: 'Other Top Twenty players who challenge you should be treated with the utmost respect and courtesy. You should do your best to see that challenges of this nature are played as soon as possible for the benefit of both parties. Avoiding or delaying challenges from other Top Twenty members will result in ranking penalty.' This rule is not enforced. If the over-riding rule is that people will be reduced in rank for not playing a challenge only after the 7 days has elapsed (or 2 days if the challenge is made after the 23rd of the month) then what is the point of this rule. We consistanly see some players flout this as they delay challenges (as evidenced in their challenge dialogue) and not showing any of the 'utmost respect and courtesy' then there will continue to be a problem. My two cents worth :) V

well if some would play others when they are on top they would not need to challenge. But since they will not be lucky to play challenge then. This is my two cents worth

some people complain a lot about challenge but when you are not in top 20 the dont even answer you when you ask them for a game been ask some of them for games for the past 2 weeks but Im not in top 20 so dont even get an answer but the challenge others because they dont get answers so where is the sportmanship so that is my two cents worth to those people who comments ty

I think that we have just seen that GC can do that. I for one, am very happy about that.
