Too Many Tourneys Not Fair For All
Posted by BillyTheKid5 (VIP) 20 Jun 2005 10:14pm

Lately, Ive noticed a lot of Tourneys being put on. Thats fine for those who can stay home to play them all day but not for those who have to work. Those of us who had, I say 'had' good ladder spots have lost them due to some of us who have to work and cannot enter the Tourneys. I would ask that Mad along with others stop hosting so many Tourneys that some of us cannot attend. Or GC should think about changing the rules on Tourneys as they apply to moving up on ladder. Not very fair for some who worked hard to get where they are at to lose it to players who can always play in torneys all day long. TY. The Kid

First, thank you for your post. GAme Colony was developed to enable the enjoyment for all, and not just a select few. I am sorry that you feel we are being unfair in holding tournaments for all who choose in enroll and play. Everyone, and not just ticketed players, have the opportunity to climb the ladder. There are some ticket players who climb the ladder without playing in tournaments. However, players are given a choice to play in tournaments, where we all get to have a lot of fun and learn and become friends with each other. But Billy, please remember, that a lot of players, have retired, have physical disabilities, play on their lunch hours, play while they are at work. You, some might say, are very fortunate to have a job, but unfortunately during the hours of most tournament action. You don't see the tournaments that have been cancelled because of lack of players. We are just giving players a choice.. You are a very skilled pool player, here at Game Colony, and not matter what statistic you may hold in ladder standings, you know where you should be. There are over 1080 pool players and we are doing our best to provide good clean fun, for more than just an elite few. Your job and family come first. We are here for rest and relaxation. Remember, there might come a time in your life when you can't work, and there will come a day when you can spend more of your time here playing pool and keeping your ladder standing where you think it should be. It's called retirement.

If you have suggestions as to how to change the ladder rotations, please by all means, post them. All suggestions are considered and you will receive a response.

In the meantime, enjoy your employment, your family and your time here, playing pool. Just don't let it consume you.

My Ladder Ranking

I have not played in a Tournament in a long while, but yet I still manage to climb the ladder. Some how? Billy you are a Very Good Player, you always seem to be ahead of me on the ladder more often than not. I will host tournaments to suit your needs as far as the times & days that will not conflict with the hours of your employment. Just let me know!

I am here for all of the Players at Game Colony!

I strongly agree with Billy here,

I have been #1 for the entire month, and I am virtually unable to play tournaments this month. I work during the day, and am even busier in the evening. I think its rediculous that in one day, somebody can come all the way up the ladder from tournaments and take over #1. Whats even more rediculous is that its mainly the same 3-4 ppl playing each tournament, which really makes it easier to climb the ladder. Its plain stupidity to give somebody that many chances in one day to become #1, and not even close to fair play. I have been beating off challenges and ladder matches all month, and its really dissapointing to see a ladder drop because of 4 tournaments in one day. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Congrats to all the tournament winners, but in reality, that doesnt mean you are #1, it just means you took first in a tournament.

A little consideration maybe,

Ty

Tourneys, Ticket games & Ladder

Just like any coin has two sides to it, so does fairness.

Players who play $Ticket games and participate in Tourneys will enjoy even more Ladder privileges starting next month.

Tourney Suggestion
Posted by cdubbs33 (VIP) 21 Jun 2005 1:16pm

I think that jumping a ladder spot for winning a tournament is really not necessary. Let me put it in perspective:

**Most people join tournaments to climb the ladder.
**Most people climb the ladder to get a payout at the end of the month
**So in essense, everyone is after tickets.

So really, why not just make the tournament games ladder games themselves, but no increase in ladder for the tournament win. Its enough of a reward for the winner to get their cash prize.

Secondly, the only way somebody could jump all the way up the top 10, is if the top 10 players were in the tournament. If top ten players are not in the tournament, there are still challenges and mini-tournaments that exist to help people climb the ladder.

Lastly, the reason that I am suggesting this is because for two months in a row, I have been beaten out of the #1 position by a tournament that somebody won. This is really dissapointing especially since I have been fighting people off for it all month. If somebody was to take over my ladder position, let them play me for it, at least then I could defend myself. I always find time to play challenges and ladder games, but rarely do I have an hour or more to play a whole tournament.

I would greatly appreciate some feedback here, and I look forward to see what others think about my suggestion for tournaments.

Ty for your time,

cdubbs

Ladder tourney winner gets 1 extra Ladder rung
Posted by webmaster 21 Jun 2005 3:24pm

GameColony Ladders are designed to be dynamic.
Here someone who holds the 1st Ladder spot has to work quite hard to hold on to it.

At GameColony there's more than one way to advance up the Ladder and unseat current leaders. Winning a Ladder Tourney is one of the great ways to bypass the current number one. After all, the current number one maybe (a) unavailable for a game for a stretch of time (b) unwilling to play in a Ladder tourney (c) unresponsive to a challenge while the Ladder time is of the essence.

Multiple Ladder tourneys are offered daily. Participate if you want to retain your Ladder spot or advance. If you are unavailable...well, sorry number one, better luck next time...

Many Ladder changes are coming starting next month. We'll announce them shortly. In brief, Ticket games ( $3 Tickets and up) and tourney participation (as opposed to winning the ladder tourney) will be rewarded in 'Ladder Points'. There will be a statement of current Ladder Points for each player. 1 Ladder point will be assigned for the Ticket game and 2 Ladder points for Ladder tourney participation. 10 Ladder points will get converted to one Ladder rung advancement. And we certainly expect that some players will like these changes & some won't.

yes i know that ladder rung can be taken very seriously, as i used to play in everest back in yahoo days, and i knew that plays would only play same players over and over again to control the top 10, yes i know that here there is challenges to try to keep things fair, but in my opinion that is not enough. a challenge is to be completed within a week of the challenge, but what keeps the #1 or whatever rank from playing other players to move #3 or #2 out of spot so there challenge really would just put them back were they were. in my feelings i think that no ladder is completly fair, there is no way to please all... i think that the tourney wins is a good idea because it gives the better players a better chance to get #1 to prevent controlling the ladder, but this only works if you have time or the tourneys are at times you can play at... i agree with 1okaylady here, i used to be #1 in canasta all the time but i also work 10 hour days and host tourneys so i really dont have time to get #1 and that is just something i had to accept... my only solution was to try and play more tix games to make up for not getting #1. i dont know this is just my feelings on the subject

if you think pool is all about no1 spot
thats ok if not thats ok too
you wanna come into crib rooms where the no 1 spot changes daily i host in crib and we run tourneys all day every day normally from am to am and we get great support and it also gives every body a go at the ladder
so more tourneys more chances of you winning one may be two or in my case lose all week
but next week could be my time
so the more tourneys the more chances you get to get to that big NO 1

Too many Tourneys??
Posted by LiLBear1 (VIP) 22 Jun 2005 5:02pm

I host Gin & Crib and I like to play in Pool. To my perspective... more often than not there aren't enough tourneys scheduled here. I try to fit my games in around my hosting schedule. I do 4-5 tourneys a day in Gin.. sometimes adding a couple of cribs to that as well. OK, so 6 tourneys at 2 hours each = 12 hours. And yet I still find time to squeeze in a game here and there. The Ladder is fun I have been # 1 in Crib a couple of times, answered all challenges, and played alot of tourneys (b4 becoming a TD)and yet I don't think I've EVER heard anyone complain that are too many tourneys being hosted there in a days time. How many are too many ?? How many are not enough?? Like a wise man once said.. ' You can't please all the people all the time'

We try to to keep a wide variety of tournys going for EVERYONE. Different hours, different formats, if your Ladder standing is so important.. make time to play. Cut that shower down to 10 mins instead of the normal 20-25...lol Take the trash out the night before... something. We have lives too and try to accomodate, it's not always easy, but we're here to furnish fun and challenges for you folks. It's up to you if you want to utilize them or not.

too many? not enough?

We sure appreciate the input of everyone.
As our tds all know my thoughts on this I will post for those without wings this time...the fact is... There are NEVER too many tournaments ! So kudos to the tds who keep on hosting and kudos to the players who keep on playing.

For those who question the ladder significant w/tournaments, our ladder was designed and developed by Webmaster to be unique. Like it, hate it or love it almost everyone has an opinion. Webmaster has designed even further improvements and equally unique rules which will go into effect very soon.

Keep those cards and letters coming in.. every single comment, suggestion and/or complaint is considered when updating and improving the games and the ladder.

The most important thing to keep in mind; we are here to have fun while improving our games and displaying our skills. The unique characteristics of our games and our ladder are a most welcome breath of fresh air.

What does #1 mean to you?
Posted by cdubbs33 (VIP) 23 Jun 2005 12:30am

I guess the question that keeps players different from TD's is that being #1 to players means they are on top, and maybe the best of the month. To TD's, being #1 means that you won a couple of tournaments that day, and somebody else will be #1 soon. That to me, doesn't mean a whole lot. Why even have a ladder if the numbers change so much? Really with so many tournaments, somebody who wins a few tournaments on the 30th or 31st will also be #1 and receive the 14 extra tix.

Furthermore, you have to realize that pool is mainly a game of skill and strategy, and isn't comparable to GIN or Crib. In each game you are counting on the luck of your cards, and you're blind to the opponents hand. In pool, a lot of times if you miss, you only get one shot.

Please consider the situations when you are scheduling these tournaments.

TY,

Cdubbs

I do understand but disagree on some of your points. Our ladder is not based on ones rating and/or super skill. “Top of the ladder” doesn’t always go to those who are
“The best” in the game. The ladder is another means of competition and those who
like ladder play are competing in ladder games and tournaments because of their
passion for the ladders. In all cases there should be lots of movement at the top of
the ladders.

“a game of skill and strategy”……….All games here are games of skill and
strategy. Ask the Gin and Crib players. One of the “skill” indicators is being able to size up your opponent’s cards, without their being visible on the table.

My HONEST FEELINGS
Posted by MADoolin (VIP) 23 Jun 2005 9:45am

I have tried to be impartial! It has been extremely difficult!

Reasons:

1) I strive to be well liked by all of the pool players. I interact with all of you by playing and being there for you all of you need help. HAVE I NOT?

2) I have been chosen to be a Tournament Director after volunteering for it. Upon becoming a TD, I obligated myself to Host a number of POOL TOURNEY's Exclusively, each and every month.

If anyone should be UPSET or DISCOURAGED it should be ME!

I have not been able to PARTICIPATE in a POOL Tournament since MAY 12th. Prior to that APRIL 29th and, on APRIL 23rd, (which should not count, due to it being a TOC).

I am not upset or discouraged by this, not one bit.

The day is coming to where I will be able to participate. What will the feeling be like when there is consistently 10-12 POOL tourneys everyday, Hosted by 4 or 5 different TD's?

Don't shun this, more and more pool players are joining everyday, from all four corners of the world. It is a fact that players want the POOL LADDER and TOURNEYS to cater to the timezone in which they reside.

If all tourneys were played daily at the same times then Hundreds of Players would never be able to participate.

We are here to be friendly and have fun, not to be upset and discouraged. So please let's all try to just get along play each other and have fun! Life is too short to be unhappy!

I have stated in prior postings that, if anyone given player would like to request times/days of tournaments in POOL, then post them and I will bend over backwards to schedule, advertise and most importantly HOST them all, at any time any day!

I am here for all of you, not to try and sabotage one's ladder position. Please keep that in Mind!

I have done nothing to any players to be treated like I have the past few days.

I am a courteous and honest person and have made myself available for all! Have I not?

Thank you for reading this!

I myself have been in the top of the ladder to, it may have not been pool. But i dont think that having more tourneys hurts me. I look of it as alot more competition and the more the competition the harder i have to work to keep it. Look at this way, when it is done and over with you can hold you head up high and me proud of what to have done. As to MADoolin needing help, I will soon be doing pool tourneys to help him out. So everyone just sit back and have fun like the rest of us.

Ma, you are a very nice and considerate person. You are very generous with your time, continuously making an effort to speak with one and all in the Pool room. I applaud your efforts and thank you very much for the time you take to speak with each and every one of us. I think that more people should take the time to express their appreciation for those who work so tirelessly behind the scenes to make this site what it is: an enjoyable place to play. Ma, I for one thank you for all that you do.

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!. According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!).   The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
