Now it has been 6 times in a couple of hours of playing that people have resigned or a few bold enough to ask to abort before they resign because they are lossing. I think the administrators need to look at this issue. There was one other abortion but it was do to the players game not working properly. They were not able to play the cards they wanted and after several tries of everything that we could think of we finally aborted.

My Guess

I've seen this happen in other games (mostly backgammon it seems) and have never thought too much about it. So maybe that is the mind set of whoever is doing all the resigning? But I agree, in canasta I like to finish out the game even if it's me doing the losing. This just happened to me actually...I had taken the pile and was looking forward to 'melding all naturals' and finishing the game to see my score...my opponent had just won the first game from me and I played it till he went out but didn't have the chance to see my score because he resigned after losing the pile...Oh well No hard feelings.

When I was learning the game, I was taught that it's bad manners to 'milk' the pile if you obviously have the win...just put your cards up and finish the game. But if you're losing, to always do your best until the game is over.

I've had one instance of hitting resign myself, but I let my opponent know that I realized she had the game, and I needed to attend to something so I was resigning.

How do the rest of you feel about this subject?
And don't you LOVE the game of canasta!! I sure do.

Again & Again

I signed back on tonight and it has happened again and again. I'm thinking that maybe the problem could be that it takes so long to place the cards when you 'get the pile' and it is obvious the opponet is going to win so they just resign. Could there be a solution that places the cards in the best places and then lets you remove, change or ok them? Of coarse the opponet should not be able to see where the cards go. Just a thought. You lose the satisfaction of seeing your score when they resign and after a long dual it is frustrating.

There's a fast shortcut for placing the cards ...

When you got the pile & ready to roll with big-time melds, it is possible to do it very fast with a shortcut:

right click inside your hand within a free (green) space. Notice the menu item 'meld all naturals'. It's a great time saver...

I love this game of Canasta, I have been playing online for nearly 6 years now, and it rocks here in Game COlony! I have had people resign on me, and yes, I have people ask for an abort when I am winning. Ridiculous. I can understand the resign issue, it seems like you got all the candy, and cant eat it. But seriously, it is a non issue if you took the pile, and then they resign to avoid seeing the big deficit you just put them in. Consider that a compliment to your amazing skills in the game!

The abort issue is simple. Hang around, hit do not abort, and wait them out. I had one player ask for an aborted game after I took a pile, which I kinda shrugged my shoulders, and said no way.. and after 3 or 4 askings, I just sat and waited until they finally resigned. I love the game, and will try to spin it always as to them complimenting me.

Now who wants to play a game! Look me up!

My thoughts...

It is great to see that players are discovering the forum here and this type of posting can do nothing but make the game much better.

As for this topic here are my thoughts. Canasta is an old game and one of much class where manners in the games are considered very important. It is considered bad conduct to “milk” a score which means running the score up as high as possible once you have hit that winning number. In live games you are to go out as fast as is possible once “game” has been reached. When your opponent has a huge pile and it is obvious a loss for you it is considered inappropriate to resign and/or throw your cards up in the air and walk away. LOL Typically you are supposed to display good sportsmanship by sitting while your opponent plays all the cards and goes out. Usually a player who intentionally runs up the highest score possible and/or resigns after losing a pile will quickly find himself unable to get admitted in a tournament or find a live opponent. However….

Much has changed with online games. Sometimes I think the losing player is just anxious to get on to the next game. He/she knows this one is lost but maybe the next will bring about a better hand. Therefore the “saving time” theory and I certainly can see merit in that response. Even in this circumstance it would be nice to type in the chat the reason for that resignation. I certainly can see no reason why an abort should be accepted once the game has progressed to the final stages.

As the room becomes more popular and we have more people coming in, there will be a multitude of personalities and dispositions. It is important those of us who are familiar with the standards here try to be good examples of fair play and good conduct. My personal observation has been very encouraging because I see others who are frequently in the room displaying terrific sportsmanship and a sincere passion for the game. Win or lose it is that really great game with a fierce competitor which we are looking for. Oh yes… the win is better, of course.

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!. According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!).   The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
